Opera
singer and
multi-millionaire
Russell Watson is facing
a legal battle for a
slice of his fortune
from the man who claims
to have launched his
career, it emerged
today.
Businessman
Ian Boasman, from
Preston, Lancashire,
represented by leading
Manchester law firm
Wacks Caller, claims
that with the help of a
local entrepreneur he
transformed Watson from
a cabaret club
entertainer in Salford
into the international
star known as “The
Voice”.
In
a High Court action, due
to start soon, Union
Music – a company set
up by Mr Boasman, and a
related firm, Arias Ltd,
is claiming they were
wronged when Watson
signed up to record
giant Decca and cut them
out of the deal.
But,
in a complex legal
wrangle, Watson is
counter-suing the firms,
claiming that the advice
they gave him actually
cost him money.
Although
it is not clear how much
money Watson has made
since his career took
off, Wacks Caller,
representing Union and
Arias, believe the claim
could run into millions.
Union and Arias are also
seeking the return of
cash they say they
invested in Watson,
including a £3,000-a-month
wage, an Audi A4 car,
dental work and gym
membership in the early
days of his career.
They also claim that it
was through them that
Watson was put in touch
with the bosses at
Decca.
Watson
started life in Salford,
Greater Manchester,
where he left school
with no GCSEs and earned
£90-a-week on a Youth
Training Scheme, before
finding fame.
The
trial is expected to
start soon at the High
Court in Manchester,
although no date has
been set.
